Paper Presentation Requirements
These requirements are designed to create useful scholarly habits, to give you the best chance of ensuring that your work is given the credit it deserves. First impressions are vitally important, and ease of use for the grader comes a close second. Other requirements make the work more useful to you, and ensure that you make educational progress as the course continues. All these requirements are worked into the grading system, which is set out in the Foundation Grading Policy and in the Standard Grading Policy which is used for all 200-level courses and above. I will not accept papers or plans which visibly neglect them, so make sure you meet the requirements!
General requirements - all assignments
- All assignments word-processed, one inch margins all round.
- All assignments quoted in full at the beginning of the paper. NO
substitute titles! NO extra titles!
- All assignments stapled. No cover page. No binder of any kind.
- All assignments to have annotated bibliography on separate page at end. Three to five works minimum.
- All assignments to have word count typed on separate line well below
the text at the end, BEFORE the bibliography. All word-processors have
this facility. If you cannot find it, try "document information".
- Subheadings for Introduction, Discussion, and Conclusion picked out in
bold typeface.
- Thesis statement within introduction and picked out in bold
typeface.
- Depending on your course, use the Foundation Grading Policy or Standard Grading Policy as a check list to make sure you have covered the necessary content.
To Complete the requirements:
Generally I assign three kinds of written-work. Click on the relevant "additional requirements" link to complete the requirements for your current assignment.
Additional Requirements for Full Papers
- 1500-2000 words only.
- DOUBLE LINE SPACING.
- Annotated Bibliography on separate page: Hanging paragraphs, SINGLE-LINE SPACING.
Additional Requirements for Paper Plans/Outlines
- 600-650 words only - fit the plan onto two pages

- Use short notes. NO FULL SENTENCES (not
even in thesis statements,
introductions or conclusions: NOWHERE!).
- SINGLE LINE SPACING
- Indented layout, as on sample, NO ROMAN NUMERALS, NO PARAGRAPH NUMBERS (so do NOT use your computer's paper-outline system).
- Word allocations beside each section heading (i.e. how many words you
think you would use in the written up 2000-word paper).
Additional Requirements for Short Note Introductions
These are full introductions, written as if they were going to be followed by a full paper, but you will not write the rest of the paper. Instead you will list the key works you would have used, and/or the main points you would have made, as relevant.
- 200-300 words only, DOUBLE-LINE SPACING.
- Use short notes, paragraph form. NO FULL SENTENCES (not even in thesis statements, introductions or conclusions: NOWHERE!).
- Annotated Bibliography on separate page: Hanging paragraphs, SINGLE-LINE SPACING.
