Here I am attaching anything relevant or useful that I'd like to be sure you can reach if you need it.
Readings Suggested by Robert McCann
These throw light on his approach and thinking. The highlighting in the text drawing attention to possibly important aspects is by McCann.
Other Material
In relation to that consensus that has emerged during the last ten years or so. Robert Hughes wrote his American Visions on the history of modern American art in 1997, and it was also made into a series-documentary. You might like to check it out - our material kicks in at about chapter 6 or 7.
Today's (28 Feb) summary on Cubism, Surrealism and the problem of entropy
In relation to de Kooning perhaps ...
- A fun little video that may turn out to be surprisingly important: Dashboard Doll - gotta love her!
In relation to Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko (and others) perhaps ...
- Circles of Tawhid and Wujud, An optical Illusion concerning the Islamic metaphysical universe
- A Cosmic Peacock, An optical Illusion illustrating something that happened to the concept of the metaphysical universe as the etymology of the words for beauty and divider/barrier shifted
In relation to Rothko perhaps ...
In relation to Dubuffet
In relation to Vasarely
For unit 10 and in relation to Fineberg p 15
For Unit 11-12 combined
Relevant to Unit 15 perhaps
For Unit 16, perhaps
- Tate Modern, Minimalism - just explore this fabulous collection. I've started you at Judd, notice the changing suggestions along the bottom and look for others.
- Minimalism with Polo Mints - OK perhaps we should be more serious, but enjoy this! Some of the works are misidentified, notably the Carl Andrés, but who cares? Surely the artists would not!
- Minimal Myth, Boijmans van Beuningen - and this is the exhibition the polo minter visited
- Minimalist Exhibition at the Walker Centre, Minneapolis in 2008. Nice range of exquisitely chosen material.
- Donald Judd
- Judd: Selected Sculptures and Interview, and the very nice selection works chronologically from the bottom of the page upwards
- Judd at the Portland Center for Visual Arts (PCVA), November 1974, lovely story and another great selection of his work
- A Good Chair is a Good Chair furniture by Judd.
- Judd: 15 unitled works in concrete, 1980-84, Chinati Foundation, Marfa, TX
- Essay on the experience of Judd's work at Marfa, TX
- Judd's essay: Specific Objects (1965) - read it and decide for yourself what he is saying.
For unit 17 perhaps (we are diverging from the coursebook and its units now)
- Robert Morris
- Box with the Sound of its Own Making - an exhaustive search has not produced the sound itself, but this short entry describes the experience of it. The image is the version copyright the artist.
- Morris's account of John Cage listening to the box - the image is the version in the Seattle Art Museum.
- Untitled [three L-Beams] 1965-1970
- The Wedges, 1967 and 1970 - three-minute video with commentary on and history of the work (first shown in Leo Castelli Gallery, and then installed in permanent form in Fairmount Park). Morris speaks, interspersed with further commentary by Nena Tsouti-Schillinger, author of Robert Morris and Angst.
- Neo Classic, Tate Britain, 1971 - this was an audience-participatory installation of Morris' work that closed after four days owing to wind in the head (over-excitement in the participators).
- Interesting piece by Steve Dietz on the disastrous Tate show, its apparent intentions, its results, and the take of the artist and curators at the time.
- Bodyspacemotionthings, Tate Modern - attempted revival of Neo Classic, 2004
- And still there were injuries!
- Conservation Issues - raises the whole issue of what precisely a "Morris" work is
- Simon Grant interviews Robert Morris - a lot of direct commentary on his work and intentions.
- Going to raise a possibility in class - check these out in light of it
- Bodyspacemotionthings
- Performance of Column
- Site 1964 - the voice-over is not original but William Burroughs reading an excerpt from his 1965 novel, Nova Express.
